Scheduled Maintenance Friday, August 30, 2013 at 03:00:00 UTC

By on August 27, 2013

We’re planning scheduled maintenance Friday, August 30, 2013 at 03:00:00 UTC lasting no more than one hour.  During this maintenance window we will restart our master PostgreSQL database to apply a setting change and upgrade our RabbitMQ server.

Thanks for your patience as we work to improve Bitbucket’s reliability.

Wild guess, i just think it will be bitbucket since git doesnt really have anything to do with it because git is a program and can use other remote repos. (not saying you should because bitbucket is king)

I think he’s asking whether we’ll still be able to push and pull from bitbucket during maintenance. A good question that I’d like to know as well.

They will restart the backend database and message queue. I think it’s safe to assume that nothing will work in that time span. However I find it odd that a company this size isn’t able to perform an upgrade without downtime.

The maintenance window will include Git and Mercurial access.

Part of the reason we’re doing this is to upgrade to a newer version of RabbitMQ, which has better support for high availability. In theory, this upgrade could allow maintenance with less downtime in the future.

By the way, you can always work “offline” with Git and Mercurial. Commit locally and push when the maintenance window is over. If you need to pull for anything critical, such as a deploy, it’s best to sync a local mirror.

No, I think he’s actually asking if Git will be included in this downtime.

          Will this include Facebook?

During the maintenance window all operations over http, including Git and Mercurial, will return a 503 “service unavailable” status code. Git and Mercurial operations over ssh will also be unavailable via a block in our authentication system.

To answer the “Will this include Facebook?” question:

I assume you mean logging into Bitbucket via Facebook. All logins will be unavailable during the maintenance.

During May to July, we can’t access Bitbucket from China normally! These days, we come back to Bitbucket, it’s fast and reliable.
