Free unlimited user source code hosting for university students

By on April 1, 2011

International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC)

We’ve had a number of requests from students and professors asking for additional users to collaborate on their university programming projects and courses. We remember what it’s like trying to save every penny you can during university and we want to help!

This is why we’re happy to announce that we’re expanding the Atlassian’s community license program to include Bitbucket.

If you are you a student with a valid university email address, we now offer unlimited user accounts on Bitbucket, for free!

Simply sign up with and verify a .edu email address here or Apply for a university account now!

The verification form does not seem very international :(nnOnly a few universities outside North America use .edu domains and phone numbers aren’t in the NANP xxx-xxx-xxxx format either…

Bad timing u2026 unless this actually is a joke, of course. Anyway, after I filled in the form (ignoring the Americanness of the description at the top and specifying a .ac.uk email address and no phone number) and pressed the Submit button, all I got was a blank page.

Sorry to hear you’re having an issue. Could you try again?

We’re using Wufoo to handle the form processing… sometimes their site goes through upgrades.

Just in case, I tried it in a different browser this time; I got ‘Success! Thanks for filling out my form!’ so it seems to have worked. :-) Thanks.

    Good point guys!

We will change the form up to make it more international friendly.

@Oleg, this isn’t an April Fools joke, however, http://www.atlassian.com/en/angrynerds is.
We have seen a good amount of applicants in the short time this has been live and we will get to yours as soon as we can. :-)

I can’t seem to submit the form in either Chrome or Firefox. As you can see in this screenshot (http://i.imgur.com/tdboG.png), the from is being cut off before I can reach the submit button.

Nope. It’s still broken. Slightly less so, but still broken.

What about students outside of US ie. who have emails from, for example, an .edu.pl domain?

Hi. I created a bitbucket account with my *.edu.tk email address and verified it. But even after one hour the account didn’t get upgraded to academic account. May I know what is the problem?

Thanks for this! Worked perfectly with an Australian (.edu.au) email address :)

There is a typo: “If you are you a student” => “If you are a student” — Also, I have a question: Will an academic account stay valid after studying? Is the edu mail address only required for registration or is the account bound to this mail address (after studying, the mail address might become invalid)?

  • Bryan

I work in an Irish university lecturing C++ to 2nd year electronic engineers. I would like use bitbucket for all the students but I don’t have an email ending with edu. I filled out the application form but I didn’t get access for more than 5 users (yet?). Should I expect a delay before I get authorisation? I’m just wondering this because labs start on Monday.
